Presentation

The dialogue between drawing and poems is based on a common vocabulary of images and words that “speak” of the essence of being Salvadoran as seen from the nostalgia of exile and explore concepts such as family values, traditions and customs, gastronomy, expressions of popular art.

Inés and Luis have known each other for several years and have participated in Salvadoran cultural events that have as their target audience the compatriots of the diaspora, those who for love or terror left their homeland and live the daily “uprooting”, the concern to preserve the memories of a past time and a changing present motivates them to create their respective archives. In a vivid and romantic way, they capture in their creations smells, flavors, expressions, gestures, colors and contrasts of the memories sweetened by distance and time, as well as the conflicts of the transformations that inexorably occur in a homeland far away territorially and seek to preserve, albeit in their works, what was and is no longer.

The use of the Náhuat language in Inés’ poems deserves relevance, in the rescue of that historical and cultural legacy that is at risk of being lost and that thanks to its learning and use, the poet collaborates in its safeguard.

From a friendly and informal conversation the project was born when they realized that what Inés writes has a lot to do with what Luis draws and therefore the concern to show side by side that feeling of love for their homeland, their families and their friends. This work is dedicated to the Salvadorans in Montreal, those who live in Toronto, Vancouver, New York, Milan, Sydney or Tokyo, to those who struggle to present a dignified and positive image of El Salvador. To our mothers Maru and Lichita, and to our towns San Vicente and Cojutepeque.

Beyond being a cultural event, this exhibition is an affirmation of the presence and voice of the Salvadoran community in Montreal, transmitting a cultural legacy to future generations.

We thank the Consulate General of El Salvador in Montreal and its staff, Mr. Fernando Garcia, Mr. Carlos Velis and Mr. Hector Cárcamo, without whose valuable contributions this project would not have been possible.
